It's a small city, to be sure, and there's a great ravine in the middle of it where there runs a "canal" surrounded on both sides by forest. Very pretty, I must say. Especially when you're looking from the station side toward the palace and cathedral.
Luxembourg is supposedly known for its banks and little else, but we saw very few banks. We have also heard that their chocolate is good, so we went into a little chocolate shop across from the Duke's palace... So not legit. It was German chocolate in a Dutch-owned shop, being sold in Luxembourg? That's worse than anywhere in the world buying Hershey's. I'm sure it was excellent chocolate, as all German chocolate is, but I don't think it was worth experimenting. I had my share of German chocolate last summer.
There was a carnival going on that day (possibly that whole weekend) and some major award ceremony for a small group of people was taking place right in the middle of it. We didn't know this until AFTER the four of us had stood behind the honorees during their photoshoot. Whoops.
We also went inside a fantastic little bookshop. It was 4 or 5 stories of nothing but English, French, and German books. I love being able to read everything in a shop. I could have stayed there much longer, but we did only have the day in the city, after all.
It was a short trip, flecked with wandering in and out of local delis and shops, pictures of the Notre Dame cathedral,
a visit to a tattoo parlor, and I think we saw most of the city that way. I would recommend going to Luxembourg if you're on a hectic trip and need a day to relax but still see new things. The great ravine is called the grund.In fact there is two ravine in this city and you have on my facebook the pictures of this "quartier du grund".
ReplyDeleteI confirm you that there is a lot of bank in luxembourg city. A lot of my friends have a job in this activities (back office). You can have 3 kind of job in luxembourg city (hotel or bank or fiduciaire)
Ou "fiduciaire" je ne connais pas le terme en anglais (installe les sièges sociaux aux luxembourg, ce sont des boîte aux lettres qui ne sont pas visible à part sur des plaques).
In fact the activities of this compagnies are situated out of the center of luxembourg city. You can see this one on my pictures (modern bulding). This is the good place where a lot of compagnies are installed. I think that you weren't on the good place, because the activities fo luxembourg is principally financial, with banking secrecy (it's the problem today)
For the chocolate in luxembourg this is strange. Because a lot of french in my area near border of luxembourg, are going to the luxembourg to by gasoil for the car (less expensive)like me, when you was in luxembourg. Usally we buy chocolate in a pomp gasoline. But normaly this chocolate comes from belgium.
You have travelled the ocean, the belgium the luxembourg and it was not possible to meet you around a glass of beer. You asked me if i could go to belgium. You have my phone number now if i can why not.
